Diving Cancun and Riviera Maya with Sealife DiversCancun and the Riviera Maya are located on the Yucatan Peninsula. The area was developed as a tourist destination in the 1970s. Since then Cancun in the northeast of the peninsula has become a thriving city, along with the Riviera Maya which is south along the coast between Cancun and Tulum. The Gulf of Mexico is to the north of the Peninsula and the Caribbean Sea is along the east coast. A great non diving activitry is Xcaret, an Eco Theme Park located in Playa del Carmen about 45 minutes from Cancun in the Riviera Maya. Temperatures range from 74 Fahrenheit / 23 Celsius in the winter to 84 Fahrenheit / 28 Celsius in the summer months.

Like any of the destinations in the Caribbean Sea, Cancun and the Mayan Riviera offer some excellent diving with hard and soft coral formations, huge barrel sponges, mountains of star coral and a wide variety of tropical fish that both beginners and advanced divers will enjoy. One thing that sets the area apart is the extensive system of caves and freshwater cenotes. Cenotes are fresh water pools connecting to submerged caverns and other cenotes. The standard formation is a round hole in the ground. Near ancient ruins of Tulum are two of the 2 longest underwater cave systems known on earth. The cenotes are not affected by temperature and offer excellent visibility.
