Wreck diving with Dive BVI Ltd - photo by Andrea PaneThe British Virgin Islands consist of 60 islands and cays located east of Puerto Rico with the Atlantic Ocean north and the Caribbean Sea south. The main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Tortola is the largest island which is approximately 12 miles (19km) long and 3 miles (5km) wide. The islands are volcanic in origin and have a hilly, rugged terrain that is covered for much of the year in a thick green carpet of tropical trees, bushes and scrub. The climate is warm, subtropical, and sometimes humid, with temperatures rarely dropping below 74ºF (23ºC) in the winter or rising above 90ºF (32ºC) in the summer. The wet season lasts from June to December.
